Why it works
- Veigar creates a cage. His E "Event Horizon" stuns enemies who cross its edge, with 725 range. It's the duo's control.
- Ziggs slows and pushes. His E "Hexplosive Minefield" leaves mines that damage and slow, and his W pushes enemies and also Ziggs backward, so it works to zone or to escape.
- Lots of range. Veigar's Q reaches 1000 and Ziggs's 850; Ziggs's R reaches 5000 and works to pressure and finish towers.
- Veigar's R executes. His damage increases with the target's missing health, so Ziggs's poke sets up the finish.
- Veigar scales on his own. Every kill with his Q and every ability hit on champions gives him permanent ability power.
Weak points: neither has a shield or a reliable jump; both are fragile; Veigar's cage can be dodged if the enemy sees it coming. To verify
Powerspikes by level
| Level | What changes | How to play it |
|---|---|---|
| 1-2 | Poke with Q and W. | Farm with the Q (it gives Veigar AP) and don't give away health. |
| 3 | First spike: Q, W and E of both. | Cage, mines and a trade as a unit. |
| 6 | Spike: Veigar's R and Ziggs's R. | Set up with mines and finish with Veigar's R. |
| Mid game | Veigar with accumulated AP. | Defend towers with the cage and mines. |
Level 3 combo (trade)
- Veigar: E on the path the enemy takes. If they cross it, they are stunned.
- Ziggs: E on the same spot: the mine slows and damages.
- Ziggs: Q and W on the immobile target. To verify
- Veigar: Q to damage the first two enemies hit, and W to take advantage of the dark matter on the one who can't move.
Combo mistakes: casting the cage without the enemy having to cross it; spending the Ziggs W you need to escape.
Level 6 protocol
- Ziggs: poke with mines and Q until the target's health is down.
- Veigar: R once the enemy is already low: the damage grows with the health they're missing.
- Ziggs: R in team fights or to clean up from long range. To verify
Game plan
| Phase | Goal | Key action |
|---|---|---|
| Start | Farm with the Q and don't take free poke. | Veigar accumulates AP with the Q. |
| 3-5 | Trades as a unit. | Cage + mines. |
| 6+ | Pressure and objectives. | Ziggs's R on towers and Veigar's R to execute. |
Runes and summoner spells
To verify
| Champion | Main path | Spells |
|---|---|---|
| Veigar | Sorcery or Domination: Electrocute or Arcane Comet | Flash + Heal or Barrier |
| Ziggs | Sorcery: Arcane Comet or Phase Rush | Flash + Ignite |
Items, matchups and bans
Pending No patch data. Hypothesis to verify: they struggle against fast engages and assassins, and do well against lanes with no mobility. To verify
Critical mistakes to avoid
- Spending both cages or mines at once. Without control, they're exposed to an engage.
- Fighting in open terrain against champions with a dash. To verify
- Ignoring the enemy jungler: both are soft.
How to play against Veigar + Ziggs
Keep your distance from the cage (a narrow edge) and don't stand still on the mines. Engages and assassins with a jump are uncomfortable for them. To verify
Frequently asked questions
Why is it a fun duo? Because they're two mages with control, mines and a lot of range: it's more about setting traps than fighting.
What does Veigar's cage do? It stuns enemies who cross its edge.
