The first levels of a game usually look calm, but that's when each lane's plan gets going. In a pair, level 2 is the first moment both champions have more than one ability and can start combining them. Whoever arrives first and goes in better coordinated can force a kill, a Flash or simply wave advantage.
What changes at level 2
- The second ability unlocks. With it come the first two-step combos.
- Trades change. A trade that was simple at level 1 can now include crowd control or extra damage.
- One side's advantage shows. If one arrives first, they can try a fight before the enemy has both abilities.
How to arrive before the enemy
The safest way is for both players to be close to the first minions when they die, so the experience is shared and both level up at the same time. If one goes off on their own, the other arrives later.
When you level up, pause for a second and look:
- Where the enemies are and how many resources they've spent.
- Whether you have vision in the nearby bushes.
- Whether the enemy jungler has shown up on the map.
Go in or wait
Go in when at least two of these conditions are met:
- You reached level 2 first.
- The enemy is far from their tower or has spent an ability.
- You have vision and know where the enemy jungler is.
- Your combo is completed in two steps and you can both do it at the same time.
Wait if:
- A gank is possible and you don't have vision.
- The enemy already has both abilities ready.
- One of you doesn't have an escape spell.
The call that changes everything
A simple phrase before going in avoids almost every mistake: "I go first" or "you go first". It sounds obvious, but many level 2s go wrong because both go in at once and nobody knows who starts the crowd control.
What to do if it goes wrong
If the play fails, don't insist. Back off, lose a wave if you have to and try again at level 3, when you have one more ability. The lane isn't lost by one failure, but by insisting on repeating it.
