The top lane is the most isolated on the map. A top laner usually plays alone, far from their team, which is why good help from the jungler at the right moment can decide who wins the lane. For that help to work, both have to speak the same language.
The plan for the first minutes
Before starting, agree on which side of the map the jungler will start on. If they start on the top side, the first gank can come very early; if they start on the other side, the top laner has to play calmly until they show up.
Meanwhile, the top laner has two jobs:
- Prepare the wave. A gank only works if the enemy is close to your side. The top laner pushes the wave a little or leaves it in a position that forces the enemy to come and take it.
- Call it early. "I'm going to push, you have two waves". A short phrase tells the jungler they can come.
When to gank
The best moment is usually right after the enemy spends an important ability or when they've come too close to your side to get experience. If the enemy sees the jungler before they arrive, the gank fails, so it's worth going through areas without vision.
Signs it's a good moment:
- The enemy lost a lot of health in a trade.
- They don't have an escape spell.
- They're far from their tower with the wave on your side.
How to split the work
- Top: prepares the wave, calls it, goes in with a crowd-control ability and finishes.
- Jungle: arrives from an unexpected side, uses the crowd control and secures the kill or the Flash.
If both are engage champions (for example two champions with dashes or knock-ups), the combo is simple: the first to arrive starts and the second finishes. If one is more support-oriented, the top laner provides the damage.
What to do when the enemy reads you
Enemies learn: if they always see the jungler coming from the same side, they stop falling for it. Then:
- Change the arrival side. A jungler coming through the river or from behind changes the read.
- Fake pressure. The top laner can push without the jungler coming. The enemy burns resources reacting.
- Play for objectives. If the lane doesn't break, the jungler can spend their time on neutral objectives while the top laner keeps pressure.
For concrete examples, see the guides for Malphite + Sejuani, Ornn + Zac or Renekton + Elise: each one explains which combo to do at each level.
