Mid and jungle synergy: priority, roams and ganks

Lanes and junglePublished Invalid Date2 min read

Mid and jungle coordinate when the mid laner pushes the wave to gain priority and the jungler uses that moment to go in or take an objective; without that shared signal, both lose time.

The middle of the map connects every lane, so a well-coordinated mid and jungle pair can shift the game in their favor without needing to win a fight. The key is priority.

What priority is and why it matters

Having priority in the middle means your wave pushes before the enemy's, so you can leave the lane without losing experience and they can't. The one with it can:

That's why the mid laner pushes the wave before any play, and the jungler waits for that signal.

How to set up a gank in mid

  1. The mid laner pushes the wave toward the enemy tower, so the enemy has to stay to collect it.
  2. The jungler approaches from a side without vision. Going through bushes or the river keeps the enemy from seeing them.
  3. The mid laner calls it. A ping or a short phrase ("now") tells the jungler it's the moment.
  4. Both go in at the same time. The crowd control starts the fight and the damage finishes.

If the enemy has many escapes, the gank mostly serves to force them to spend resources, and that is useful too.

When the mid laner should roam

A good roam meets three conditions:

If one is missing, stay in lane. A roam without those conditions usually ends in lost experience or a death.

When the jungler should help mid

The best moment is when the enemy doesn't have their escape spell or has already spent an important ability. Helping mid out of habit is a mistake: sometimes another lane needs help more, and the jungler has to choose.

Frequently asked questions

What is having priority in mid?

It's being able to push the wave before the enemy so you can move around the map without losing experience or gold. The one with priority chooses when to leave to gank or take objectives.

When should the mid laner roam?

After pushing the wave, with the jungler nearby and without the enemy being able to punish the tower.

Should the jungler always help mid?

No. If mid doesn't have priority or the enemy is stuck to their tower, the gank is much less effective. It's better to help another lane.
